Place de la Bastille

Why the Place de la Bastille is a Paris tourist attraction that isn’t worth a visit

Storming the Bastille!

You may have a romantic idea about the Bastille, based on movies and books and so you may want to see this famous place during your stay in Paris. Being there where the French Revolution began on July 14, 1789, where the poor stood up against oppression by royal absolutism. Bah! Dream on, but don’t go there - you would be very disappointed!

Because … there is nothing left, not a single stone. Instead you find in the middle of the huge place a roundabout and a column called La Colonne de Juillet. And this column is sure not worth your precious time in Paris!Opera de la Bastille

Since the 90’s there is the Opera de la Bastille, which is a nice building, but it’s NOT the Bastille!

We recommend that if you do visit the Place de la Bastille, go there at night, because there are some fine restaurants and bars. Otherwise you don’t miss a thing if you leave out this bad tourist attraction!

Attraction: Place de la Bastille

I was a bit disappointed too of the place de la Bastille. I expected some remains of this truly historic place, but unfortunatly there is nothing left. But the place is still very nice, especially at sunset.

I’m an American living in Paris and while I understand that many people have rated the Place de la Bastille not a great tourist attraction - I disagree in the sense that if you want to get a taste for the French culture and where people go to hang out - this is a great place to go! It’s very lively, the Colonne is beautiful and it’s one of the best places to people watch. Anyway - my two cents.

I had no idea that the Bastille was no longer standing! That it is destroyed is akin to the Brits tearing down the Tower of London which draws tourists by the thousands each year! It was a waste of time to go to the plaza, and the author of the site is correct, I had one day in Paris, had I not gone there, I might have made it to the crypts before they closed at a ridiculously early 4 pm!

molly - you are missing the point. I will be visiting Paris first time in few weeks and with only few days there i certainly appreciate the input. Paris is great and all attractions are interesting in their own way, but it’s impossible to see all in short period of time. Thanks guys, keep writing…
