Pompidou Center (Centre Pompidou)

Why the Centre Pompidou is a Paris tourist attraction that isn’t worth a visit

The Centre Pompidou is a weird building in the Beaubourg area of Paris, near Les Halles and the Marais. It houses a public library and the Museum of Modern Arts.

For some this building is amazing, for others it’s plain ugly. Even the French don’t know if they like it or not.

The building was built in the 70s and named after the former president George Pompidou. All the service pipes which are normally in the house walls are on the outside of the building: the water pipes, electricity lines, air condition tubes, etc. are on the outside and painted in flashy colors. It kinda looks like a big fat oil refinery in the middle of the city with some paint stains.

As mentioned before the Musée National d’Art Moderne is in there with lots of fancy modern art stuff. Apparently you can call yourself a famous artist, when you paint some red and blue dots on the canvas. If you have a clue about modern art, you find there Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. For us it was hell of a lot too abstract!

We recommend you visit the Centre Pompidou to have a look at this monstrosity! But unless you’re an abstract art lover, don’t be bothered to go inside the Centre Pompidou. The paintings are just too weird and quite honestly very boring. Rather spend the admission fee for something useful and relaxing, such as a wonderful tasty crepe with a good cafe au lait in one of Paris numerous cafes!

My family and I had a great visit here. The outside tubes to ride up were fun and you get a beautiful view of the city. The Matisse’s are fabulous and the restaurant is cooler than cool.

I disagree as this is a museum with so much to offer! Their holdings are fabulous for those modern art fans. I spent 1/2 a day and did not see all. The view is incredible.
